Marshall Peer Tutoring Program
Marshall Peer Tutoring ProgramThe Marshall Peer Tutoring program offers help for a variety of problems which might arise for children in the process of their learning. Teachers and principals have many reasons to do this and as part of a great collaboration between the school and district, the program helps students gain more knowledge and understanding of the subject they are being taught. The program has three parts; a selection committee to examine the needs of the teachers, a committee to recommend what type of problems need attention, and a management plan to guide the work of the program. Many experts, including the Chicago Board of Education, agree that the program has helped provide an avenue for students to learn and master subjects better than they would without the assistance of peer tutors. It does this through face-to-face discussions with the peer tutors and through in-class teaching by the teachers. Teachers love to work with each other and the benefits are there in th e form of a better relationship between the teacher and the student that result in more personal attention to the student and thereby improve his or her learning abilities. Teachers also benefit because the students are learning at their own pace and can make improvements on their own, instead of having to constantly push the student to do things he or she may not be ready for yet. However, the program has drawbacks as well. There is a chance that the problem that needs attention will be one that affects the pupil's behavior or learning environment, so a professional must be involved with the student's performance at all times to ensure that they do not suffer any loss in performance. In addition, if the problem is based on lack of interest, lack of ability or a lack of study time, a student may be unable to focus and learn. These issues cannot be eliminated but can be managed by the teacher. Other teachers are able to compensate for the lack of peer tutors by taking time out to stud y.Some teachers are uncomfortable with the idea of a program which can encourage them to use harsher lesson plans. Even some who do like the program find that it is hard to ask permission from their superiors and the various departments in the school, as they might not agree with the program. There is a limit on how much change can be made in a district without approval from the board of education, which means that some compromises must be made. It is important to remember that the program has been tried and found to be effective with a variety of students.A peer tutoring program can be more useful to students who have problems with peers or in groups and it will probably be better for students who have difficulty understanding other students. The benefits of the program are many, but the hazards cannot be ignored. One has to remember that just because the peer tutoring program is effective, it is not safe. Some teachers and principals take advantage of this and teach students to dis like each other for selfish reasons. This type of instruction will most likely lead to an even worse situation than before. Many students understand that they cannot fight the odds and that the Marshall Peer Tutoring program should be a tool to learn and grow from. This should be encouraged, not feared, so that students can become better learners and responsible citizens of the world.

Meet the teacher ESL Instructor, Stephanie, in Chiba, Japan
Meet the teacher ESL Instructor, Stephanie, in Chiba, Japan Stephanie, an ESL teacher from Maryland, began her Teach Away placement at the Berlitz Japan Inc. school in Chiba, Japan, teaching English about four months ago. We caught up with her to learn how sheâs enjoying her teaching abroad experience so far, and see whether she has any advice for others who are interested in teaching in Japan. What initially interested you in teaching abroad? I've always desired the experience of living abroad in another country for cultural immersion and exploration, and also to learn more about myself, including my strengths and weaknesses. ESL seemed like an attractive option because it allows me to work directly with individuals living in Tokyo, and also exposes me to Japanese culture in a more authentic way. Why did you decide on Japan? Honestly, I was open to going to virtually anywhere around the world. My application with Berlitz moved quickly, and I accepted their offer and decided to give Japan a try! Did you have any concerns before you left? One of the major concerns I had about leaving America to teach abroad was leaving my friends behind. I had been living in D.C. for a long time, and grew comfortable there, but knew I wanted a life change. Another concern I had was about securing housing abroad before I left. This one was a challenge for me, as I had to be flexible and revise my housing situation once I got to Japan, but it all worked out in the end. Describe the school that you teach at and what a typical workday looks like for you. The school I teach at is a private language center where students attend according to their desired schedule. Class sizes are mostly small, either one-on-one or with a few students at most. This individualized or small group setting gives students more attentive teaching time and allows me to focus more individually on their learning needs. I tend to work the afternoons and late evenings during the week, and full days on the weekends. Typically, I learn who I will be teaching for the day when I arrive at the school for work, and the students vary everyday. Weekends tend to be the most busy as clients often have the most availability over those two days. What have you learned about life in Japan from your teaching experience? Japan is a country that greatly values its cultural identity, traditions, and customs. The people here are respectful, courteous, hierarchical, and disciplined. Due to small living spaces, people are economical and aware of their surroundings and how they affect them. Public transit is safe and convenient, and many people walk or bike everywhere, which is refreshing! What is youf favourite meal that you've had? I am a fan of Japanese comfort foods. I love Oyako-don, which is a traditional sweet and savory chicken, egg, and rice bowl dish. Also, freshly made ramen soup (not the freeze-dried type!) in Japan is always delicious. The noodles are slightly al dente, which makes it fun to eat and slurp. Slurping your ramen is considered good manners in Japan as it is a sign that you enjoy your food. What's your neighborhood like? I live in a quiet residential neighborhood with convenient access to the city, where I work. I'm just a quick 10 - 12 minute walk to the local subway station and everything that I need is close by. Where would you like to go next? I am open to many places. We'll see what happens! Do you have any tips for teachers who are looking to apply to teach abroad? Be flexible and adaptable regardless of where you go. There are natural ups and downs during the adjustment process, but just remember to be yourself and do things you enjoy to help you feel grounded! Inspired by Stephanie's experience? Take a look at our current teaching jobs in Japan here.

Discipline is the Key to this Students Success
Discipline is the Key to this Students Success Discipline is the Key to this Students Success Abhinav, 11-years-old, Math Level J, Reading Level III At 11-years-old, Abhinav is studying above grade level ahead his peers, and can complete his school work with ease. Thanks to the Kumon Math Program, heâs working on challenging algebraic concepts, such as factorization and quadratic functions. In the Kumon Reading Program, heâs taking a deep dive into high school-level literature and analyzing pieces such as Oscar Wildeâs The Picture of Dorian Gray.Having been enrolled in Kumon since he was six, Abhinav has gained the confidence and motivation to help him through any challenge. He credits Kumon for helping him become a stronger student in school. âKumon is a very inspiring and unique program,â said Abhinav. âThe fact that I am ahead of my grade level has made my school work easier, especially math. This has created more free-time in my schedule, allowing me to finish other work and have time for sports. Applying what Iâve learned in Kumon at school has helped me a lot.â While heâs still undecided on a career path, he does see a future in medicine. âI want to either be a physician who specializes in sleep medicine, medical research, cardiovascular surgery, or really any career that deals with medicine. I am confident that I will become sure of what I want to do in a few years,â said Abhinav. Abhinav had the opportunity to get a glimpse into what itâs like to be a college student, having been selected to attend Loyola University Chicagoâs Pre-College Summer Scholars Program. This exciting opportunity allows exceptional students to get ahead academically through taking courses from Loyolaâs knowledgeable faculty. Courses include a focus on business, pre-health, psychology, and STEM. Abhinavâs academic success has even risen to new heights, being a part of the Gifted Education (MOSAICS) Program at his school. Students who are in MOSAICS follow an accelerated curriculum that provides enrichment and unique learning experiences to meet the needs of gifted students. Itâs no wonder that Abhinav was selected by his teacher to be the grade representative, which he is extremely proud of. Outside of the classroom, Abhinav enjoys playing sports as it is a way for him to not only exercise, but to also relieve stress. He particularly enjoys badminton and table tennis. Most of the time Abhinav will play with his dad, and they have even set up a ping-pong table in their home. Abhinavâs hard work and discipline has not gone unnoticed, as he was one of 55 students selected to attend the 2018 Kumon Student Conference in Calgary, Canada. We had the opportunity to speak to Abhinav about his Kumon journey. How has Kumon helped you inside of the classroom? Kumon has helped me in so many ways in school as 90-95% of the concepts being taught have already been covered in Kumon. This has significantly helped me, especially in math. My hard work has paid off as I have been accepted into a 7th grade accelerated math class in school. How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom? The values that are taught in Kumon have helped in my daily life. The core values such as honesty, hard work, and confidence have been vital to my success. I have gained confidence which has really helped me in various public speaking engagements. With honesty and hard work, it has taught me to be sincere with anything I am working on and give it 100%. If you could sum up your Kumon experience in one word, what would it be? Exquisite. What did it mean to you attending the Student Conference? It was such an honor being chosen to attend the Student Conference in Calgary. When my dad shared the news with me, it was a proud moment. I really enjoyed meeting other Kumon Students and exchanging ideas. All the speakers at the conference were interesting and inspiring. The entire experience was a superb feeling! What advice do you have for other Kumon Students? My advice to other Kumon Students would be simple. I have seen so many kids drop out of the program at various ages. Having been in Kumon for almost eight years now, I have hit many challenging levels. Whenever I felt stuck on a challenging concept, I asked questions, and remained persistent until I achieved the desired result. Iâd like to tell all Kumon Students who are just starting out to keep trying and never give up. If you donât give up during any challenge, it will help you a lot later in life. Top Places to Visit in Spain (+ 10 Faux Pas To Avoid There) Suzy S. Want to avoid looking like a tourist during your trip to Spain? In this post, youll first learn about some of the top destinations in Spain then, tutor Emmanuel M. explains what NOT to do while youre there! Spain is known as a beautiful, romantic, and overall wonderful place to visit. Tourists across the world visit Spain to explore the local sights, food, and traditions. Youll find that the people of Spain tend to be laid-back, good-natured, and cheerful and there are plenty of options for destinations, from hidden gems of Spain to the more well-known tourist attractions. The Top Places to Visit in Spain Located on the Iberian Peninsula in Europe, Spain is a popular travel destination. This beautiful nation is home to stunning coastlines, islands, mountains, and more. Here is a look into five of the top places to visit in Spain. Barcelona Barcelona is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and for good reason! The city has a little bit of everything, including unique architecture, exciting activities, and beautiful beaches. One of the most interesting areas to explore is Las Ramblas. This district in the old part of the city is open to pedestrians. In this lively area, youll find shops, restaurants, live performers, artists, and more. Another must see is La Sagrada Familia. This large cathedral is visited by more than 2 million people each year. Although construction began in 1882, the building is still in progress and scheduled to be completed in about 20 years. Andalucia If youre interested in learning more about Spains bullfighting history, Andalucia is one of the best places to visit in Spain. The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Sea is also located in Andalucia. Built in the 16th century, it is the third-largest church in the world, as well as the burial site of explorer Christopher Columbus. See Also: Important Spanish Travel Phrases (Video) Valencia Valencia is the place to visit in Spain if you are looking for delicious and diverse cuisine. Throughout history, the city of Valencia was invaded and inhabited many times by the Greeks, Romans, and Moors. Each of these cultures influenced the flavors used in cooking, leading to the diverse culinary choices found there today. In particular, Valencia is known as the birthplace of paella. This traditional dish is prepared over a wood fire in a large pan called a paellera. Typically, a paella will include Spanish rice, olive oil, saffron, tomatoes, and chicken. After youve had your fill of paella, visit the Mercado Central de Valencia for cured meats, locally made cheeses, and fresh fruits, including the iconic Valencia oranges. Madrid As the capital of Spain, Madrid is one of the most popular places to visit in Spain. It is home to Palacio Real, one of the most impressive palaces in all of Europe. Each of the nearly 3,000 rooms is luxuriously decorated and furnished with marble, stucco, and mahogany. Along the Gran Via, you will find beautiful, elaborate 20th-century architecture, including the Edificio Metropolis. Also located in Madrid is the Museo del Prado, which is considered one of the worlds greatest art museums. Now that you know the best places to visit in Spain, its time for that trip right? Not so fast! Before you visit, youll want to do a little bit of research so as to not totally look like a tourist. Just like with every country in the world, there are certain cultural faux pas (social âno-noâsâ) that you should avoid if you plan on visiting Spain. Lets take a look at the dos and donts as you assimilate to some of Spains culture and customs: 1. Fashionably late is the norm â" NEVER arrive on time! If you get invited somewhere (whether thats someones house, or a place for a party/get-together), keep in mind that everyone is expected to be late! If you show up on time, either youll be the only one there, or the hosts will still be getting ready. Bonus Tip: Carol from Wandering Carol told us When heading to Spain, dont make the mistake of trying to keep to the same schedule that you do at home. Dont get upset if the store is closed in the afternoon, or on Sunday. Dont assume dinner is going to be served before 10pm. Dont think you need to rush through lunch (though this is tough when you want to sightsee!) and above all, dont think you wont be dancing until dawn in Madrid. 2. Impatience is a sin (unless itâs during traffic). The people of Spain go about their day with little pressure and no rush. Its very common to see the locals chatting with clerks at a supermarket or with barbers at a hair salon. Things go at a very slow pace, so if you show people youre annoyed or impatient, be prepared to face looks of disgust unless itâs during traffic, in which case people prefer to move faster so that they can enjoy the rest of their day! 3. Donât modify ANY food â" restaurant or homemade! For Spaniards, food means the world. Food is undoubtedly part of their culture, passion, and art. So to go anywhere and modify food thats given to you is like a huge slap in their face. To add a little something (like salt or pepper) to a dish thats served to you is like saying âYou did this wrong let me show you how to make it better. 4. Donât show your disgust or dislike of a food! Since food is so important to the locals of Spain, if someone gives you a dish that you find appalling, youd better hide that disgust well; the locals might look at you as an uncultured individual who doesnât appreciate good food. A good excuse is to pretend youre full or you couldnât eat another bite despite it looking really good. Bonus Tip: Ken Baldwin, founder of TotallySpain.com, shared this extra tip with us We recommend reading up on the mealtimes in Spain, which vary significantly with elsewhere in Europe and North America. When seated at a restaurant and ready to order, look around at the tables next to you for guidance. Keep an eye out for platters of food in the center of the tables that are called âracionesâ. The Spanish love to share and many menus are designed with this in mind. 5. Always put up a fight, but let them win when they offer to pay for dinner. The people of Spain are very generous and kindhearted, so donât be surprised if they take you out and volunteer to pay for everything. However, they expect you to put up a fight to show youre being mindful, thoughtful, and respectful of their customs. Always remember to thank them and be appreciative. If you end up spending your own money on other things or on someone else, make sure you know how to be efficient and save your travel money. 6. Be extremely complimentary of homemade food! Food, yet again, is an important aspect of Spains culture. When youre going over to a Spaniards house and they offer to feed you, always remember to: a) accept the food and eat it (even if youâre full, always accept to eat at least a little bit), and b) compliment whoever cooked the food profusely. Its also common to spend the first few minutes of the meal talking about the deliciousness of the food. 7. Do not talk TOO good of other places. Everyone has pride for their hometown and where they come from thatâs completely normal. However, when visiting Spain, do NOT spend more than a couple of minutes talking about how amazing your home is, because they may get offended. To them, nothing is like Spain not to mention, they have love-hate relationships with several countries in the world. Be sure to look at a few Spanish travel blogs to see how fellow tourists converse and interact with the locals. 8. Never bring up racist matters in Spain. Unfortunately, racism is alive and well in every country. Theres no country out there where even a semblance racism isnât felt. But when visiting Spain, NEVER bring up racist issues â" remember, youre a guest, so you may not know the history, current events, public opinions, or customs that all influence racism. Theyre well aware of the matters, but theyll act very defensively because nobody likes speaking about their countryâs problems with foreigners. 9. Donât have a limp handshake or be awkward when hugging or double-cheek kissing. In Spain its customary to give a sturdy handshake to men and a double-cheek kiss to women (and sometimes men). If you give a weak handshake, its rude and considered an insult. Also, feeling awkward or uncomfortable when doing the double-cheek kiss makes you seem stuck-up and can also be taken as an offense. 10. Donât be too polite or well-mannered â" Spain is casual and you should be too. People in Spain love the easy, calm life. Theyre very casual and would prefer it if you are too while visiting. If you portray yourself too seriously and well-behaved, locals might think youâre stuck-up, or perhaps they might misinterpret your demeanor as saying youâre better than them. Its smart to learn a few Spanish phrases for traveling so you can use them in your casual encounters. As Ive said many times before, and will continue to say many times more: Spain is an amazing and beautiful place to visit! As long as you remember not to commit these faux pas, youll definitely enjoy yourself. Youâll find it in every genre and style of music â" from blues and jazz to folk, hip-hop, classical, metal, and pop â" and youâll even find it in the bedrooms and on the walls of people who have never given music a thought in their life. The guitar is iconic â" iconic and ubiquitous.A Caution for the Beginner Guitar PlayerThis can be both a blessing and a curse for those seeking to learn how to play the guitar. A curse because, firstly, as a lot of people know a couple of chords, a lot of people think they can teach the instrument. Watch out, then, for the less good teacher.Secondly, the market is saturated with terrible instruments that donât really do what they are supposed to do: namely, to support a budding guitarist to become the best musician that he or she can. A second lesson, then: choose an instrument wisely as if your guitar isnât playable, youâre never going to want to tune up and play those riffs, licks, and chord progressions. However, remember, the ubiquity of guitars and guitarists is also a blessing. The UK, to be honest, is full of very good and very professional musicians, who are experienced in teaching and experienced in making, recording, and performing music. If you choose to start learning to play the guitar, you will be welcomed into a huge community of very lovely and supportive people. Youâll also have plenty of role models to look up to.There are tremendous, multidimensional benefits to learning how to sing or play a musical instrument.
